Beowulf (The movie)

Background Info

Well here it is finally people of big action movies which rip off of history and literature will have a new chance of finding their own new chance at being the next spartan319931 or beuwolf4554 that seems to haunt the web and online games like a bad joke. Anyway mainstream popularity aside i wanted to share with you the background behind the epic character which i most humbly associate myself with.

Beowulf and Grendel is originally an epic poem which describes the story of a Norse hero and King called Beowulf. The poem itself is of an unknown author and the origin dates back to more than 2 millenia ago. The actual text is the only one of its kind and gives many historians a great deal of background on the early saxons and geats in British and Scandinavian Europe. And what they were exposed to in terms of literary art.

What makes the tale even more fascinating is that it has bold moral, fictional and dramatic influences on many of the great works of the greatest historical periods of our time and many of their authors as well. What adds to the mystery is that the poem and story itself is incomplete and no other sources of literary information have ever been found to complete it and may never be.

This type of story based poetry and what some would enjoy calling "High Fantasy" was the first ever recorded by mankind and hence its importance. Many gifted and well known writers including Shakespeare, JRR,Tolkien "Lord of the Rings" Robert E, Howard "Conan" The Grim brothers "Known Fairytale writers H.P Lovercraft "Cthulu" and many more have created their worlds and most of their lore "monsters / sorcery / magic" by directly adapting it from that of Nordic mythical folklore "Trolls , goblins, orcs etc"and of these the oldest predated work ever to include such creations was attributed to the incomplete epic tale that is "Beowulf and Grendel"
For the history buffs this means a great deal because we are talking about a time long before the Romans or Greeks began cultivating the world with ideologies and philosophical moral based epics like Homers "Oddessy" etc. Therefore your looking at a very complex and unique contribution that changes the face of literature forever. And even more surprising is its origins which stem off of Scandinavian myths a culture shrouded in barbarism and warlike behavior where even the smallest amount of creative self expression was nonexistent till the better half of the byzantine era.

Anyway enough of my endless ranting on how it all began and what makes it so great in my opinion. To sum it up if you ever wanted to know where the dragons and magic comes from in western culture and keeps popping up all the time then heres where it all began as far as organized fiction goes. Beyond that its just word of mouth.

Now as far as the movie goes well i have high hopes and of course very scary conclusions. The only thing they can do at the moment to ruin the experience for me would be if they didn't give you the epic feeling or atmosphere you would give any work of art like lets say Shakespeare. Because trust me its on that level as far as the literary community goes, its a poem that has been studied dissected and analyzed over and over again for any student studying western literature for the better part of 400 years. So if Hollywood just turns it into another cliche historical action story with big boobed celebrities to rack up box office hits then i will officially lose faith in ever taking any one of these movies seriously again.

The Cast

Ray Winston as (Beowulf)

Anthony Hopkins as (Hrothgar)

John Malkovich as (Unferth)

Robin Wright Penn (Wealthrow)

Angelina Jolie (Grendels Mother)

Director:
Robert Zemeckis

Writers (WGA):

Neil Gaiman (screenplay) &
Roger Avary (screenplay)

Now heres where am interested, we have a good set list of big budget actors and i happen to think john malkovich is one of the best of our time. And yet i cant stop shaking since Anglina is a great actor in her own right but she seems too linear to me at times and brings too much sexuality into everything she portrays maybe its good in this role but she will have to do a lot more that that. Ahhh yes and Anthony Hopkins.. well yeah he is highly acclaimed and very good at what he does theres no doubt. But i cant help to think that he is falling into the same curse as Sean Connery did which is they stop being the characters and the characters start being them. In the end of the day its not "Oh look he did Hrothgar so well" it becomes "Oh Anthony was so good" so ya it may be a good performance but not necessarily one that reflects the characters... you know what i mean? O.o

Now the Director and the writers i "am" happy about since they have all shown the guts to stick by their work and protect artistic integrity. Neil Gaiman specifically due to his work on the hit graphic novels "Sandman" and "mirror mask"

So there you have it thats pretty much how its going to turn out. And atleast i hope the background info helped some of you who might care about the origina of a movie and not just generally cram it into the dust and say "omg its uber cool how he hit with that sword" untill the next generic movie comes out to grab your sparkly eyed attention. :SMASH:

The movie releases on the 15th of November

التعديل الأخير:
afaik , there was a movie with the same name for Chris Lambert caled Beowulf, but no idea if it was good or no, just remember the name only
well wat u said was new to me, now i'm looking forward to watch this movie , i never had the chance to read the poem so i'll watch the movie for the moment
And yet i cant stop shaking since Anglina
yea that's why i like to watch a historical movies or movies based on novles with unkown actors\actress , like Oddessy and 300, i dont like to watch this type of movies with actors i used to see them in many rules or like u said "the chars being them"
i hope they dont mess up with the story i dont want to see another Alexander movie >.<
p.s. i saw the link and guess wat? YAY another fetish men like 300 XD
jajajajajajajaja

Yep the Chris Lambert version was 1999, although i love his voice and always keep wishing he would just give up on acting for now and just become a voice actor, he still has the curse of falling into extremely low budget B movie releases. This version wasn't the best out there they went off on their own as far as story accuracy concerns and besides Chris, the rest of the cast left little to like in terms of a performance.

Theres also a 2005 version called "Beowulf and Grendel" which stars some fairly unknown actors of European background i believe. The movie has great scenes which focus on the more dramatic words and storytelling of the saga that really sets the mood in quite a professional way. I think u might like that one Zappa cause it has that non influenced and neutral method of role playing used by Armand Assante in the "Odyssey". There is an Axxo dvd rip release out atm if you want to check this on out before the CGI big budget one hits.

Thx for the clip man, am glad it was about the writers telling it how it is and not the actors pretending like they are the be all and end all of any cinema showing. Am also thankful how the host and writers aren't afraid to state the fact that they are striving for an original experience and not just another flashy "LAZOOOR FIGHTERJETS SHOUTING EXPERIANCE" hopefully though they are being honest about that part and it reflects in their work. they obviously arent afraid of mentioning its literary and artistic value that was never taken lightly by hollywood before.

Good Show, Straightforward Host, thx again

P.S umm shouldn't u flag that as a spoiler man? :heh:
They are talking too much detail for non readers of the story...

^^

Ya i know what u mean, i dont think he put an emphasis on it being a spoiler because most people took the story as reading material in school for most of the western world. However for the sake of people who don't know the exact events i suggest that they not view the clip since it does outline the details of whats in the story. :6:

Ok i saw the movie on the weekend.l I have to say i am shocked and amazed at how they pulled this one off. Its very good at certain things. And then it disappoints in others.

My Review:

Story:-

Well here was the most major aspect that was influencing me, lets say its a classic story and they didn't change the outlying ideas of what its about. But they did adjustments to it to make its meaning more clear to the casual viewer. Adjustments which highlights some ideas of what some people think the text was about and presented them in a decent way.

For example there is a strong sentiment that the original "Beowulf" text shows signs of early christen alterations to the story which might prove the influence Christianity had on the literature present at the time of the up heaving of paganism through out Europe. The same idea can be found in many Roman traditions and symbols which show a clear merging of christen and pagan systems together, so as to soften the transition of nations into a new religion. In the movie this is presented boldly and not hinted towards as it is in the text. But it is still created in a way which greatly influences the original climax of the story and the reasons for many sudden shifts in atmospheres.

What impressed me the most about the writing was that all these alterations where at least addressed by a very unique method of storytelling which should be used as creatively by other film makers. What the guys did was they admitted through words and actions in the story that their interpretation was supposedly what truly happened and that the characters different actions in the movie "is" what directly created the different text version. And they brilliantly tie this in with a believable theme, which is "A changing world" that as mentioned before is linked with the idea of a growing new religion. And this changing world is what brings about how important it is to keep the story of Beowulf alive in a new world with no heroes or monsters only war amongst men. So basically in a very sneaky way they used their own movie to bring about a very believable interpretation of the texts on their own. Now thats what i call making an effort to cover up your changes with acceptable detail. So am happy, and i would recommend anyone interested in seeing how smart the writers were in doing this to read the actual poem. I also highly disprove of anyone trying to take the movies methods of storytelling as the only source of information for explaining what or who Beowulf was.

Special Effects:-

Well theres not much to say here besides the obvious. The CGI is the best ever created or used as far as terrain and character modeling goes. Its the Next-Gen of movie magic sensations. I know some of you may doubt it at first but yes "it is all CGI" your eyes will play tricks with you at times because it is that good. Of course what causes this is the overlapping of the original film shot at a green screen and the then the detailed mapping of the CGI skin and models over the original. Kinda like making a mold and then filling it in.
Great effort here, and if you cant follow the story you will want to go to see history made in cinema once again. I also don't recommend anyone to watch a Dvd screener or a stolen camera version of the movie since you will lose a lot of the intended quality of those effects. If your too cheap to watch it in the cinema then i tell you to at least wait till theres an actual Dvd rip to download.

Music:-[/U]

Now here was another interesting point for me, since sure they dished out the proper war inspiring orchestral theme which was great, but not as many tracks as you might expect in a movie such as this. However they did make up for it by including some of the actual verses of the poem into melodies and songs sung and told by the characters themselves. Like the scene where the queen sings for the warriors. That was kind of method was good enough of an attempt for me personally.

Score 8.5

=========================

The Acting:-

Well as much i wanted this to be done better, it was disappointing to see some high profile actors not live up to their expectations. Ray Winstone (Beowulf) did his part well presenting his character as intended with great line deleviry and heart felt emotion, however i feel like he may have overdone some of "Eye-Winking" type humor, which may have represented the idea of (Pride being a curse). But eventually making up for it with great charisma.

Now the rest of the cast i cant be so forgiving, since you lose major amounts of money for actors like Angelina (Grendels Mother) and Anthony Hopkins (King Hrothgar). For roles that were average in my opinion and could have been done just as well as many other fine "less paid" actors. And the only reason this disappoints me is because it took away from the role of other characters who should have played a much stronger role John Malkovich (Unferth) and Brendan Gleeson (Wiglaf), for the sole fact that they were given less important scenes compared to how much the first two were given. Wiglaf especially since he is Beowulfs greatest companion and was supposed to be a much bigger supporting role in the text.

Score 7.0

=========================

The Bad Stuff:-

Well besides the above mentioned quirks the only thing that made me flinch a lot was the fact that everyone is going to be trying to get into that Red Bull adrenaline injecting steroids atmosphere that "300" brought to us. When Beowulf shouts "I am Beowulf" i couldn't help choke on my popcorn since i was expecting something like that but not twice for gods sake. And they could have made a better job at inserting something like it instead of such a poor last minute sentence. Anyway at least i enjoyed the words that came before it since those were verses from the poem as well. maybe thats what hurt me the most... You can imagine my shock when i am hearing great words of poetic vibrancy followed by a "I AM BEOWULF" that had already turned into a remix in my head going over and over again.

====================

The Good Stuff:-

Well its all basically what i said earlier, if your into that sort heroic legendary feeling then you might enjoy this film. However many people might lose a lot from the subtle intentions of the film which are mainly visible to the readers of the story. So if am going to leave you with one good reason for at least the most basic of viewers, then go see it for the breathtaking CGI.

Everyones enjoyment varies in movies like this. thankfully there was something for me to enjoy personally, and it could have been a lot worse.
